The Renault Logan – first perspective – comprehensive review

with 25 comments

I took a test drive on both the Diesel and the Petrol Variants.

Here is my take on it to personally go for this car as I was one of those who was keenly interested in acquiring this vehicle (either a BUY/HOLD)

Diesel – HOLD, Petrol – BUY if we want to take a chance on an unproven car in the Indian market — despite the leading reviews on television saying the Diesel variant is better than the Petrol variant! This is always one of the issues buying any new entrant to the market since it (and its defects) are largely unproven. The same principle applies in all aspects of product development. We need this trial period to evaluate if the product satisfies our needs or not.

Mahindra-Renault Logan

Critical metrics for evaluation

Mileage – The engineer I spoke to told me that the Diesel Logan will easily give you a mileage of 16-20 km to a liter of Diesel. This is good. The Petrol is supposed to give a mileage of about 10-12 km to a liter of Petrol.

Air conditioning – Very poor (both variants) – the AC was a big letdown. The cooling is not at all good. A big negative.

Ground clearance – this was my biggest grouse but it appears as though the Mahindra Sales people have been trained on this and have done some clever cover up for this by trying to convince customers that the Renault displayed website at http://www.mahindrarenault.com has displayed the fully laden ground clearance and not the unladen clearance as other manufacturers do. For a safe measure, I took a scale and measured it and it did come upto 172 cms as they said it would so they are right in a way. The picture confirms this though the scale is not visible.

I drove the car over rugged roads on Bangalore’s airport road and took a detour on some countryside roads – it handled well.

Handling and pick-up – the handling is quite smooth though the power steering isn’t as smooth as that of say, the Honda City/ The pick-up is Ok – nothing to write home about (both the Petrol and the Diesel).

The gear shift is not slick (again, for both the variants) – its quite tight and requires a complete clutch press to switch gears. Overdrive (5th gear) and reverse do not slot in easily – you need to make an effort at it. The accelerator got stuck a couple of times but the mechanic accompanying us told us it was because of the floor mat – I did not buy his story though!

The frontal view – This is good – much better than my previous Honda City. The seating is adjustable and the one I drove came with Lumbar support so it was really quite comfortable. The left clearance needs some getting used to since it is not visible – you need the assistance of the side view mirrors.

https://ecofin.files.wordpress.com/2007/04/dsc00068.jpg

The rear view during reversing – this is quite poor. The Renault has a high rear portion and this renders reversing quite a handful.

https://ecofin.files.wordpress.com/2007/04/dsc00077.jpg

The boot – this is quite good and extremely spacious – as good or even better than my old Honda City.

https://ecofin.files.wordpress.com/2007/04/dsc00060.jpg

The looks – quite good from the front, average from the rear – again, its got that typical workhorse type look. Its not exquisite compared to my Honda City.

The dashboard – It looks bright especially for the high end variants where they have introduced a small “computer” – if that is the right name, that tracks the basics such as a trip sheet, the mileage etc. There is a standard rpm meter similar to the Honda City and the speedometer from 0 – 200 kmph.

Mahindra_Renault Logan

The interiors – finish – I feel that in their hurry to roll off the Renault-Logan from their assembly lines, Mahindra and Renault have skipped attention to detail. A classic example is this picture. Look at the finish – its so crude!

https://ecofin.files.wordpress.com/2007/04/dsc00105.jpg

I went by the common Indian car way and used the right side switch for the indicators but to my dismay, the wipers started swishing! I was then told that this is a converted Left hand drive to a Right hand drive car and therefore the indicator switch is on the left! The power windows and the other switches were at the central console next to the gear shift. The door opening levers are a bit rugged and on the Diesel vehicle the lever did not even work correctly (though I would attribute that to more of a localized incorrect wear and tear or rough usage than to a genuine manufacturing defect).

This speaks volumes of Japanese car manufacturers versus others such as the French (Renault) or the Americans (GM). If this was a Toyota or a Honda car, their quality engineers would’ve scanned the entire thing with a fine-toothed comb. Renault needs to pay this attention to detail while selling their cars in India if they are to adhere to Carlos Ghosn’s predictions of selling 50000 units for Renault to make a sizable profit on the Logan’s introduction for the Indian car market.

  1. […] 6th, 2007 Please see: https://ecofin.wordpress.com/2007/04/15/the-renault-logan-first-perspective-comprehensive-review/ for a complete first hand review that followed a test drive of the famous Renault Logan launched […]

  2. Apart from the above mentioned details from the “First Perspective” I would like to add one more comment about the pickup and Logan’s ability to climb the inclines,
    1. When I test drove this vehicle (Diesel Version, 1.5 DLS) in Pune, it was a pathetic experience, I was unable to get a head start from a signal where we stopped. This vehicle does not have good power in the second gear. And as said before needs full clutch for gear shifting.
    2. On the incline of 30 deg, it was a really miserable, I could only climb with the vehicle in gear no. 1, second gear would not let me climb at all. This was also accepted by the driver who accompanied us from the show room.

I have purchased, Hyundai’s Verna instead.
For me Renault proved to be a complete disappointment.

  3. I agree with you Amit. I was all ready to purchase this Renault Logan and was utterly dissapointed so much so that I did not even feel like taking a test drive on the Petrol variant. I expected more from Renault given they are up against such strong competition in India. I hope their future versions will have sufficient improvements.

  4. I test drove the car too. I guess you have pointed out the problems. But there are 2 other major issues. One is that the morons have placed the hood opener (bonnet in Indian) on the extreme left of the passenger seat! And the next is that even on the highest end version, there is no remote trunk/boot release – do I gotta open the dicky with a key ? How stupid! The car is priced at the 6000 € mark in Europe, why does the base model start at 9000 € in india? The pickup was shitty, even in the 1.6 engine. I actually found the gearbox smooth and the brakes quite powerful.

  10. I drove the car (diesel DLS), was OK but engine is under-powered.Engine should have been atleast the same which Renault is using in Europe i.e 1.4 dCI with 70hp. It seems Renault is clearing the older engine stock in India.
Poorest things were the body (paint quality ) finish , dash-board colour (dull beige) and dull silver louvre, gear-knob finish. It seems some old man has designed/chosen the colours for the Logan. Also the rear seat was very badly designed, particularally the Head Restraints.
In nut-shell except from mileage and space everything is poorly done.

  15. I’m all set to buy Logan diesel. I’m only waiting for Mahinrda to replace the wipers that move in opposite direction. The current wiper direction does not clear the glass properly and under heavy rains drive lacks the complete clear vision. Some corners of the front glass are not cleaned. The current implementation of wiper is suitable for left hand drive.

  17. hi,
More than comments I have suggestions with regards to “Mahindra Logan”…the car is simply awesome but a lil modifications in shape and the budget will also be not too high
(minimal budget)and I m sure tat it would be a big hit on the road compared to cars of its class….

u can get back to me in person to know what I can suggest the company.

    Thanks & Regards

  18. Guys!

Thanks a lot for the comments, I have gone through the website, blogs and what not.
The comments mentioned above really makes me think, as most of us thought I too desperately wanted to buy this car.. but, I believe I need to re-think as most of us are doing (who ever has not bought this car yet) on going forward.

    Cheers!!

  19. I own a 1.4 GLX since about a year now and believe me it is an excellent vehicle.. no idea ’bout the diesel one.. when i test drove he 1.6 i was almost scared for the poor pickup it had.. the dealer gave me some contact numbers of existing 1.4 glx owners who reassured me that the vehicle is good…the test drive vehicles are poorly maintained..

Mahindra service is decent.. wish they had given lumbar support for 1.4

I am glad i took their advise..

  22. I have purchased a Logan(diesel) and it is giving very good performance. It can be compared with the costly cars like Fiesta& Verna. Excellent mileage, very smooth. Very spacious. A/c also excellent. Only negative I noticed is the ground clearance of 170 mm is not felt. A/C blower could be made little more silent(higher blow rate).

Overall a very good car of this class

  25. Hey,

If u guys must know, Mahinda Renault has launched the new LOGAN PLAY.

I visited the showroom and and saw the new logan play, i even took a test drive,
the performance is amazing, the fresh look of the car does attract the buyers, it has the all new sporty look and flashy vinyls does compliment the car.
the car seems easy to maintain and you also get a music player which can be played via USB, it is a total value for money.

check out this link, it might just help you :- http://www.mahindrarenault.com
